Walk into any mattress section and the choice usually comes down to three technologies: pocket spring, memory foam, and latex. Each one works on a different mechanical principle, and that's really why they can look almost the same from the outside yet feel completely different once you actually lie down.

Pocket Spring

Pocket spring mattresses use individually wrapped coils that compress on their own, instead of one connected spring unit. Each coil only reacts to the weight sitting directly above it, so couples tend to get good motion isolation, and the surface has a responsive, slightly bouncier feel underfoot.

• Feel: responsive and buoyant, without the sinking sensation foam tends to give.

Memory Foam

• Airflow: dense memory foam holds heat the most out of the three, since the same density that creates the contouring also limits airflow. This matters more here than in cooler countries, so a breathable cover or ventilated foam construction is worth asking about.

Latex

Latex sits between the other two in feel. It contours somewhat like foam, but bounces back much faster, closer to how a spring behaves. It also naturally allows more airflow than dense memory foam.

• Feel: supportive with a gentle contour, and noticeably more responsive to movement than memory foam.
• Airflow: generally sleeps cooler than memory foam, which makes it a fair middle ground for humid weather.
• Best suited to: sleepers who want some contouring comfort without the slow, enveloping feel of memory foam.

Durability and Motion Isolation

Pocket spring and latex mattresses both tend to keep their supportive feel for years of regular use, as long as the build quality underneath is solid. Memory foam can soften in the spots where body weight presses most often, especially in lower density foams. For motion isolation, pocket spring with individually wrapped coils and memory foam both do well. Open coil designs without individual pocketing pass movement across the bed more noticeably.

Hybrid Constructions

Plenty of mattresses today pair a pocket spring base with a foam or latex comfort layer on top, trying to bring together the support and airflow of springs with some of the contouring feel of foam or latex. It's often a sensible middle path if you can't decide between the pure versions of each technology.

Edge Support and Getting In and Out of Bed

Edge support is worth checking no matter which type you're leaning toward, particularly in smaller bedrooms where people often sit on the edge of the bed to get dressed. Pocket spring mattresses with reinforced perimeter coils usually hold their shape best at the edge, while softer memory foam can give way more than you'd expect when you sit right at the border. It's a small detail, but one you only notice after living with a mattress for a while.
