What Furniture Warranties in Singapore Actually Cover, And What They Don't

Warranties Are Not All the Same

"Warranty included" sounds reassuring on a furniture tag, but the actual coverage can differ a lot between retailers, and even between product lines from the same store. Knowing what a warranty actually promises, and what it quietly leaves out, saves you from disappointment months or years down the line.

What Furniture Warranties Typically Cover

  • Structural defects: problems with the frame, joints, or internal support structure that show up under normal use, such as a frame cracking or a leg loosening beyond normal wear.
  • Manufacturing faults: issues present from the point of sale, like uneven stitching that comes apart quickly, a mechanism that fails to work properly, or hardware that was faulty from installation.
  • Certain mechanical parts: recliner mechanisms, sofa bed frames, and adjustable components are often covered separately, sometimes with a shorter warranty period than the main frame.

What Warranties Usually Do Not Cover

  • General wear and tear: fading fabric from sunlight, cushions softening after years of use, or a leather surface naturally developing character over time. These count as normal ageing, not defects.
  • Accidental damage: spills, tears from pets, scratches from moving, or damage from a household accident are almost never included under standard warranty terms.
  • Environmental damage: issues caused by excessive humidity, direct sun exposure, or placing furniture too close to air-conditioning vents are frequently excluded, which matters a lot given our climate.
  • Improper use or care: using the wrong cleaning products, overloading a piece beyond its intended weight, or skipping assembly instructions can void a claim.
  • Self-assembly or third-party repair issues: damage from disassembling and reassembling furniture yourself, or having it repaired by someone other than an authorised technician, is usually excluded.

Singapore's Climate Adds a Specific Wrinkle

Our humidity and heat genuinely speed up certain kinds of wear: fabric can turn musty faster, wood can expand and contract with humidity swings, and leather can dry out under strong sun near windows. Since this counts as an environmental factor rather than a manufacturing defect, most warranties won't cover it. That's why proper placement and care matter more here than in cooler climates.

This is also why some retailers add specific care guidance for humid conditions on top of the standard warranty terms, such as recommended distances from windows or air-conditioning vents. Reading these notes carefully at the point of purchase, rather than after a problem shows up, makes any future claim far more straightforward.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy

  • What exactly is the warranty period, and does it differ between the frame, fabric, and any mechanical parts?
  • Is the warranty valid from the delivery date, or from the date of purchase?
  • Does making a claim require proof of purchase, and how is a claim actually assessed: in-home inspection, or photos submitted online?
  • Are cleaning or maintenance requirements attached to keeping the warranty valid?
  • Is there a cost for technician visits, or is assessment included?

How to Protect Your Coverage

Keep your receipt or order confirmation somewhere easy to find, take photos of your furniture on delivery day in case a dispute comes up later, and follow any care instructions given, especially around cleaning products and direct sunlight. If something seems off with a piece (a squeak, a loose joint, uneven cushioning), report it early rather than waiting, since some warranties require issues to be flagged within a certain window after they first appear.
