But the entryway, the one place everyone passes through every single day, usually gets nothing at all.

Shoes come off at the door here as a matter of course, and yet most homes have nowhere proper to sit while doing it. Shoes pile up beside the rack, bags land on the nearest dining chair, keys and masks drift between the console table and the kitchen counter because there is genuinely no fixed spot for them to live. A simple bench by the entrance quietly fixes all of it in one go: somewhere comfortable to sit while taking shoes off, storage underneath for the shoes and umbrellas themselves, and a flat top for the small items that would otherwise end up scattered through every other room.

Plenty of benches double as a shoe cabinet with a lift-up seat or side drawers, so they earn their keep rather than sitting there purely for looks. If the entryway genuinely has no floor space to give, a wall-mounted fold-down seat or a small stool that tucks entirely under a console table gets you most of the same result without taking up permanent room.

What to Look For

• Wipeable materials: the entryway sees more dirt, moisture, and scuffing than anywhere else in the home, so delicate upholstery is usually the wrong call here.
• Real seating stability: it needs to hold actual weight comfortably, not just look sturdy from a distance.
• Storage sized to your household: a single person flat and a family of five need very different amounts of shoe storage underneath.
• A finish that survives daily contact: umbrellas drip, shoes track in rain, bags get dropped without much care, so the surface needs to shrug that off without looking worn after a few months.

Fitting It Into an Existing Home

If you have already moved in and the entryway feels impossible to work with, start by clearing out whatever has piled up there: a shoe rack pushed against the wall, a cluster of umbrellas, some stray box that never found a home. Once that is gone, most entryways turn out to have more usable width than people expect. Even a narrow bench with no built-in storage, paired with a basket or tray underneath for shoes, gets you most of the same benefit without a full renovation.
