Start with accurate measurements. Singapore HDB living rooms typically range from 15 to 25 square metres, and many condo living areas are even tighter. Mark out where the sofa will sit with tape on the floor, and keep at least 45cm of walking clearance around it.

Think about how the space connects to everything else: the balcony, the dining area, the corridor. A sofa should fit into how you move through the room, not sit in the way of it. This matters even more in open-concept layouts, where the living and dining areas share the same footprint.

Material Matters in Singapore's Climate

Singapore's humidity sits around 80% on an average day, and that puts any sofa material through its paces.

• Leather: Durable and easy to wipe clean, though it can feel sticky without air conditioning. Condition it every 3-6 months so it does not dry out and crack.
• Fabric: Breathable and comfortable against bare skin, but it picks up moisture and odours more easily. Go for removable, washable covers if you can.
• Faux leather: Kind on the budget, but it tends to peel sooner in our climate, particularly in rooms without air conditioning.

An L-shaped sofa can anchor the living zone nicely. Set the longer section against the wall and let the shorter return mark a natural line between living and dining.

Family Living (5-Room BTO or Larger)
