Choosing between a queen and a king bed sounds simple until you actually measure your bedroom. Singapore's HDB and condo master bedrooms come in fairly specific sizes, and getting this decision right up front saves you from a bed that leaves no room to move. Here's how we usually walk customers through it.

Planning Your Bedroom Layout

A standard Singapore HDB master bedroom runs around 12 to 15 square metres, and into that you need to fit the bed, a wardrobe, and maybe a side table or two. Start with the bed itself and put it against the longest wall, since that's usually the natural focal point of the room. Leave at least 60cm clear on each side you'll actually walk around, so getting in and out of bed doesn't feel like a squeeze.

Once the bed is placed, think through the wardrobe next. Make sure its doors can swing fully open without knocking into the bed or anything else nearby. If the room is on the tighter side, a sliding-door wardrobe buys you back some of that clearance.

Choosing the Right Bedframe

• Storage bedframes: hydraulic lift or drawer storage make the most of the space under the bed, useful if your room doesn't have much built-in storage to begin with.
• Platform bedframes: low-profile and simple, these tend to make a small room feel a bit more open.
• Upholstered bedframes: softer and cosier, though they do need a little more upkeep given Singapore's humidity.

Look for adjustable shelving, a proper hanging section, and built-in drawers to keep things organised. Good ventilation inside the wardrobe matters too, since Singapore's humidity can encourage mould on stored clothes if air can't circulate.
