How High Should a Dining Table Be? Getting Dimensions Right

Getting Your Dining Table Right, From the Ground Up
Good furniture decisions usually come down to good information, more than taste alone. At Nova Furnishing, we have found that buyers who understand the numbers before they shop end up far happier with what they bring home, so this guide walks through exactly what those numbers should be.
Getting the Dimensions Right
In many Singapore homes, the dining area shares space with the living room, which makes accurate measurements essential before you shop. Allow at least 60cm per person along the table edge, and leave 80 to 100cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture so chairs can be pulled out and pushed in without a fight.
For a standard 4-room BTO, a table seating 4 to 6 people is usually the most practical size. If your dining area runs narrow, a pedestal-base table lets you tuck chairs in fully in a way a four-leg design often cannot manage.
Choosing the Right Table Shape
- Rectangular. The most versatile option. It fits neatly against walls and gets the most seating out of the space, which suits the narrow dining areas common in HDB flats.
- Round. Brings a more intimate feel to dining with no sharp corners to worry about, which works well in square-shaped dining spaces and homes with young children underfoot.
- Oval. A generous surface with a softer visual line, best suited to medium-sized rooms.
- Extendable. Handy for festive entertaining during CNY, Hari Raya, and Deepavali, while still folding back down to something compact for everyday use.
At Nova Furnishing, our dining collections cover all of these shapes, chosen so the proportions and style pair well together.
Pairing Chairs With Your Table
Chair height and table height need to work as a pair. Standard table height sits at 73 to 76cm, and seat height should fall between 43 and 48cm. Get that combination right and long meals stay comfortable instead of turning into an exercise in bad posture.
In tight spaces, armless chairs tuck under the table more completely than armed ones. If your home hosts frequent gatherings, it is worth considering stackable or foldable chairs you can bring out only when needed. At Nova Furnishing, our dining chairs are built to match our tables in proportion as well as look.
