A TV console is one of those pieces that's easy to fall for on looks alone, and you only spot the sizing problems once it's actually sitting against your wall: the TV hangs over the edges, the console feels too bulky for the room, or the screen ends up too high to watch comfortably from the sofa. A few simple sizing rules can save you from most of these headaches before you buy.

Rule 1: Match Console Width to TV Width, Not Screen Size Alone

TV size is usually described by its diagonal screen measurement, and that number doesn't tell you much about the width you actually need to plan for. As a general guide, your console should be at least as wide as the TV itself, and ideally a little wider: ending 15 to 30cm beyond each edge of the screen looks far more balanced than a console the TV spills over on both sides. If you have a very large TV in a compact living room, mounting it on the wall with a lower, narrower console underneath can solve the proportion problem without needing an oversized piece of furniture.

Rule 2: Get the Height Right for Seated Viewing

Comfortable viewing height comes down to where you sit and how far back you are. As a rough guide, the centre of the screen should sit roughly at eye level when you're seated normally on your sofa. For most Singapore living rooms with standard sofa seat heights, that puts the ideal console height somewhere in the 30 to 45cm range, though it does shift depending on your own sofa and how far away you sit. A console that's too tall has you craning your neck upward during long viewing sessions, while one that's too low leaves you looking down at an angle instead.

Rule 3: Plan Depth for What Sits Behind the Screen

If you're running a set-top box, gaming console, soundbar, or streaming device, the console needs enough depth, typically at least 35 to 40cm, to hold all that equipment with room for ventilation and some cable slack behind it. Enclosed cabinet consoles look neat, but they can trap heat around electronics if there's no ventilation gap, so look for consoles with back panel cutouts or open-back sections if your equipment tends to run warm.

Rule 4: Check the Weight Rating If You're Mixing Screen and Storage

If your TV is going to sit directly on top of the console instead of being wall-mounted, check that the console's top surface can actually bear the TV's weight without flexing over time, especially for consoles with a glass or thin engineered-wood top.

Rule 5: Match the Console's Visual Scale to the Room, Not Just the TV

In a larger living room, a console sized correctly for the TV alone can end up looking lost against a long feature wall. Here, sizing up slightly, or adding a matching side cabinet, brings the visual balance back. In a compact HDB living room, the opposite problem shows up more often: an oversized console with heavy detailing can make the room feel more cramped than the TV itself ever does.
