How Singapore's Climate Affects Leather

Leather is a natural material, and it responds to whatever environment it sits in. In Singapore, that means a few specific things:

• High humidity lets leather soak up excess moisture, which can leave it feeling clammy and, in poorly ventilated corners, invite mildew.
• Humidity swings between air conditioned rooms sitting around 50% and non air conditioned spaces closer to 85% make the leather expand and contract repeatedly, which speeds up cracking.
• Tropical warmth dries out the natural oils in the leather faster than a cooler climate would.

The Essential Monthly Care Routine

Weekly: Dust and Wipe

Wipe down all leather surfaces with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. This clears dust before it mixes with moisture and turns into surface grime. For light dirt, dampen the cloth slightly with distilled water. Skip tap water, since the minerals in it can leave marks behind.

Monthly: Condition

Use a leather conditioner made for tropical climates. Every 4-6 weeks works well here, noticeably more often than the 3-6 months you'd hear recommended in cooler countries. Conditioning puts back the oils that humidity and air conditioning strip out.

Quarterly: Deep Clean

A pH balanced leather cleaner handles the build up that collects in creases, seams, and armrests, where body oils and sweat tend to gather. Follow up with conditioner once you're done cleaning.

Preventing Common Problems

Sticky or Clammy Feeling

This shows up when humidity is high and the room isn't getting enough air movement. Keep the space ventilated or air conditioned when the sofa is in regular use, and run a ceiling fan even when the aircon is off.

Mould or Mildew

Spot mould early and treat it with equal parts water and white vinegar on a soft cloth, then dry the area thoroughly. After that, improve airflow around the sofa so it doesn't come back. Avoid draping throws or blankets over a leather sofa for long stretches in rooms without air conditioning.

Cracking and Peeling

Usually down to not conditioning often enough, or too much direct sun. Keep your sofa away from windows that catch strong afternoon light, particularly in west facing units. Staying consistent with conditioning heads off most cracking before it starts.

What NOT to Do

• Skip baby wipes and household cleaners. Their chemicals strip the leather's finish.
• Keep leather out of direct sunlight. UV rays fade the colour and dry the material out.
• Never use a hair dryer on wet leather. The heat causes damage you can't undo.
• Don't over apply conditioner. Too much clogs the pores and leaves a sticky film behind.
